Lagos Life tips and tricks that actually matter
Most "tips" for a new game are just a list of features. These are the decisions that actually change your outcome — the ones that separate a player who is comfortable by week three from one who is still scrambling for Saturday rent.
1. Treat Saturday rent as the only deadline that exists
Every other timer in Lagos Life is soft. The rent timer is not. Your Fun bar can be red, your Hygiene can be embarrassing, and you can be eating the cheapest thing on the menu — none of that ends your run. Missing rent does. Plan backwards from Saturday, always. If Saturday is the thing you keep losing to, the problem is income rather than discipline — see how to make money in Lagos Life for the full ranking of every income source.
2. Match your career to your trait, not to the pay table
The highest-ceiling careers are Music and DJ, but if you did not roll a trait that accelerates Music, you will get there far more slowly. Skills gate promotion, and traits multiply skill growth. A promoted mid-tier career beats a stalled top-tier one.
The cleanest pairings
- Tech Bro or Sis → Tech (Coding)
- Smooth Talker → Banking, which also has the best entry pay at ₦4,200
- Hustler → Trading, Hairstyling or Event Planning (all Hustle)
- Gym Rat → Fitness Coach or Nursing (both Fitness)
- Foodie → Chef (Cooking)
- Musical → Music or DJ
3. Do not buy a fridge before you have a generator
Power is a real mechanic. The double-door fridge is explicitly flagged as needing power, which means during an outage it does nothing for you. If you are going to buy appliances, budget for the generator and its fuel at the same time — or buy the cheaper non-powered alternatives (kerosene stove at ₦1,100, cooler box at ₦700, rechargeable lamp at ₦1,100) and skip the problem entirely until you can afford to solve it properly.
4. Eat cheap, and know which food is efficient
Food in Lagos Life is not just flavour text — each item restores different amounts of different needs. Party jollof is the best pure Hunger fix per naira; Chapman is the cheapest Fun boost.
| Food | Cost | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| 🍛 Party jollof | ₦1,500 | hunger +35, fun +6 |
| 🍢 Suya | ₦2,000 | hunger +28, fun +10 |
| 🍤 Small chops | ₦2,500 | hunger +22, fun +12 |
| 🍲 Pepper soup | ₦1,800 | hunger +30, energy +6 |
| 🥤 Chilled zobo | ₦500 | hunger +6, fun +8, energy +4 |
| 🍹 Chapman | ₦800 | fun +14, social +4 |
The efficient pattern: eat something with Hunger, and let Something Fun come from a venue you were going to visit anyway rather than from food.
5. Learn what is open when you finish your shift
Venues have real opening hours, and a lot of them are shut by the time a day shift ends. If you are working a normal job, plan your Fun and Social around places that are actually still open in the evening.
| Venue | Area | Opens |
|---|---|---|
| 🎷 New Afrika Shrine | Ikeja | 14:00 – 04:00 |
| 🪩 Quilox | Victoria Island | 22:00 – 05:00 |
| 📚 The Library | Victoria Island | 22:00 – 04:00 |
The General Hospital, the Police Division and Naija Radio House never close, which makes them useful refuges when your needs are critical at 3am.
6. Mind the governor — it changes your economics
This is the tip most players miss entirely. The governor election is not cosmetic: winning policies apply to the whole city and change your income and costs directly.
| Policy | Effect |
|---|---|
| 🚐 Transport subsidy | Danfo and keke fares are half price |
| 💼 Minimum wage raise | Everyone earns 15% more per shift |
| 🎉 Owambe season | Fun at places around Lagos is 30% stronger |
| 🍛 Food subsidy | Groceries and food are 30% cheaper |
| 💡 Steady light | NEPA cuts are shorter and rarer |
A transport subsidy halves your travel costs. A minimum wage raise is a flat 15% pay increase for everyone. If you are about to make a big purchase or commit to a long commute, check what is currently in force first.
7. Bladder is the fastest bar in the game
It drains faster than anything else, and it is the one that ruins plans. Before you start a long shift, a cross-city journey, or the daily hunt, top it up. This sounds trivial until you are three venues from home with a full bar.
8. The daily hunt is worth doing
Every day there is a clue pointing to one location in Lagos, and it pays a reward. Roughly 14,000 players complete it daily, so it is contested — but it is free income and it forces you to learn the map, which pays off in travel efficiency. If you are stuck, the clues are written in plain English about recognisable places.
9. Take the cheapest housing for longer than feels right
Every naira you are not paying in rent is a naira you can put into a skill, a business or a buffer. Moving up in housing is a status decision with a permanent recurring cost. Do it when the cost is trivial to you, not when you can just about afford it.
10. Play on desktop for long sessions
The game is real-time and canvas-heavy. On mobile it works, but for a long grinding session — multiple shifts, the hunt, travelling across the city — desktop is smoother. And if a link from Instagram or TikTok opened the game inside an in-app browser, move it to a real browser; in-app browsers handle a persistent real-time connection poorly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to level up a skill?
Skills grow when you do activities tagged with that skill, and your starting trait multiplies the growth rate for one of them. The practical implication is that you should pick a career whose skill matches your trait, then spend every spare moment on that skill rather than spreading across several.
Should I buy furniture early?
No. Furniture mostly restores needs and improves decor, and several items need electricity to work. A foam mattress at ₦1,800 is worth it because sleep restores Energy; a double-door fridge at ₦13,200 is not worth it until you have reliable power and a generator budget.
Does the governor affect me?
Yes, directly. The elected governor issues city-wide policies with real mechanical effects — a transport subsidy halves danfo and keke fares, a minimum wage raise increases everyone's shift pay by 15%, a food subsidy makes groceries and food 30% cheaper, and a steady-light policy makes NEPA cuts shorter and rarer.
When should I move house?
When your weekly income comfortably exceeds three times your rent in the new place, and when you are no longer worried about the current week. Moving up costs money and increases your recurring obligation, so a premature move is one of the most common ways new players stall.
